About the position
Reporting to the Team Leader, Statutory Planning Advisory, the Planning Advisor is a member of a team responsible for the leading role as a statutory referral authority for planning and mining development proposals. You will assess and respond to planning applications referred by local government and planning authorities, providing authoritative advice to prevent harm to Victorian
communities and the environment from pollution and waste.
This is an exciting role for a regulator that wants to contribute to the success of the Organisation as it enters a new era of environmental protection in Victoria. Working under broad direction of the Team Leader, Statutory Planning Advisory, you will actively contribute to a positive organisational culture and achieve the highest standards of performance and integrity; fostering genuine partnerships across all levels of government, industry, and community to deliver organisational outcomes.
Key accountabilities
1. Working under the direction of the Team Leader, Statutory Planning Advisory, deliver the Organisations function as referral authority for all planning decisions that have significant environmental impacts, and for earth resources projects under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.
2. Actively contribute to the development of a positive and high performing team culture, including by identifying and implementing opportunities to improve teamwork practices.
3. Provide authoritative and timely planning advice.
4. As required based on prioritised demand, support the provision of strategic advice and support to planning officers within State and local government, including advice on structure or precinct plans, planning scheme amendments and planning policy or process to ensure the prevention of harm to the environment and human health is considered up front in land use planning.
5. Actively contribute to all aspects of statutory planning function.
6. Support and enable the continued development of planning functions so that the primacy of prevention of harm is central to all statutory planning decisions.
Key selection criteria
1. Experience and qualifications
• A relevant tertiary degree and/or post graduate qualifications is desirable.
• Experience in land use planning, preferably within Government.
2. Knowledge and skills
• Knowledge of the Environment Protection Act 2017, Environmental Effects Act 1978, and Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.
• Knowledge of the Victorian Planning System.
• Knowledge of strategic and statutory planning processes, and the translation of policy and guidance
into practical application.
• Ability to apply relevant government legislation, regulations, reporting directives and procedures, to
achieve optimal organisational outcomes.
• A broad understanding of environmental regulation as it relates to pollution and waste is desirable.
