A Council in Western Victoria is looking for a Senior Urban Designer (Band 6/7) to join their team on a temp contract for 6-12 months.

- $55-$65 P/H plus super depending on experience

- Suitable for a Landscape Architect/Urban Designer/Design Engineer or other experienced in public realm design
- Covering long service leave until Mid 2025
- The role is undertaking preparation of project plans inclusive of site analysis, concept development, project costing, community engagement in order to provide “pre-design” stage for full understanding of the project in terms of its cost and implications and for the benefit of the organisation and the community.

City Design is part of the Economic Growth Division within Council’s Development and Growth Directorate. We provide design advice and arboreal advice for Council projects and input into a range of other projects and strategies. Our projects include public realm design, streetscapes, bike paths and trails and design support on a range of other council projects.
We require a designer with suitable landscape/civil design experience to work within our team. We have a number of projects that require design development and consultation within and externally for realisation. We seek to develop responsive design outcomes that take account of changing climate and inner CBD greening to create engaging and interesting spaces for people who live and work in the CBD.
The successful candidate must be able to work with limited supervision and be able to identify the design problem and resolve a solution quickly and efficiently. The successful candidate must be able to prepare simple illustrative concepts for the purpose of internal discussion; community consultation; project costing and design briefs and other information as required for external design development. Where required some detailed documentation for tender and construction will also be required. Suitable experience in the development and delivery of local government projects is highly regarded.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Demonstrated experience in landscape/urban design/engineering in the public realm.
- Ability to undertake site assessment, analysis and synthesis as required to inform a full understanding of the site, the opportunities and the site constraints
- Ability to develop design ideas and represent them graphically and of a suitable quality for presentation, engagement and documentation.
- An ability to fully document projects such as streetscapes, bike paths and trails.
- Skills in any or all of the following AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project.
- High level of written communication skills with experience preparing plans, technical specifications, reports and analysis information.
- Demonstrated experience in providing concept plans, detailed designs, construction documentation and cost estimates for landscape projects.
- Inspect and sign off on construction works, ensuring that works are carried out in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
- Plant knowledge and an understanding of plant performance/requirements in urban environments is desirable.
- Understanding of landscape construction and civil works is highly regarded.
- Experience in site supervision of landscape construction projects is desirable.
- Knowledge of contract administration requirements.
- Experience with Community Consultation is desirable
